One of the poorest, and most dangerous, places on earth is Cite Soleil in Port au Prince, Haiti. Mothers take dirt, mix a little lard and a few spices, and make mud cakes that look like little cookies. They also sell them.
I used to make mud pies as a kid, but it was always to throw them at someone else during our mud pie wars.
I can’t imagine having to eat one, or wanting to, to ease the pang of hunger.
Someone once said, “We must go about the world with the idea we can transform it without demonstrable proof of our success.” Even though the last year’s crisis has increased the numbers of people who are starving, it is still worth our efforts to insure that mud cakes can some day be eliminated because people have enough to eat.
